What's in a Name?

1988 Passport 40 For Sale

Description

We have owned “SALTWHISTLE” since she was one year old. She has been meticulously maintained and constantly upgraded, always with top-of-the-line equipment and components. Her varnished bright work is pristine. She is energy self-sufficient with solar & wind. She spent the first half of her life in fresh water on Lake Ontario and has been our live-aboard home in the Caribbean since 2000. Saltwhistle has been completely upgraded over last 3 years for a planned circumnavigation.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND LAYOUT:

The beautiful joinery is of classic Passport solid teak staving throughout. All doors are solid teak and are bevelled and hand fitted. Lockers are teak lined. The interior is finished in satin varnish. Teak cabinet doors are louvered with custom bronze latches. Headroom is 6’-4” and storage capacity is generous. All opening ports, hatches and the companionway doors are screened. There is also a set of solid teak doors for the companionway.

FORWARD:

The owner’s forward cabin has a large V-berth with a custom built, hinged and foldable mattress by Boat Beds (new in 2008) facilitating access to storage bins underneath; port and starboard over-berth lockers, a full length hanging locker, port and starboard screened ports, overhead hatch with hinged screen, port and starboard Cafrano ventilation fans; and new Alpenglow LED reading lamps. A louvered teak door on the forward bulkhead provides access to the chain locker.
A solid teak door separates the main salon from the forward V-Berth making the forward cabin separate and private.

HEAD:

The head is just aft of the forward cabin, portside, with pressure hot and cold water, vanity and sink and generous upper and lower locker space as well as a spacious mirrored medicine cabinet and full length mirror on the head door. There is a large separate curtained shower stall with a teak seat and teak shower grate; the shower drains to a dedicated sump and is pumped overboard. The shower was repainted and re-varnished in 2008.

SALON:

Directly across from the head is another full length hanging locker. Next aft is the spacious main salon with a U-shaped settee to port Salon Aftsurrounding a large, removable inlayed teak dining table with adjustable height pedestal, a filler platform to convert the area to a double berth and a large overhead hatch with hinged screen. To starboard in the main salon is an upholstered settee (full length which sleeps one). There is generous storage in the main salon with shelved lockers and storage behind the seat backs as well as a separate liquor/wine locker having a storage cabinet below it. The settee section over the engine is hinged for quick and easy opening vertically for access to the engine, fuel filters, sea water pump and mechanical systems.

NAVIGATION STATION:

The navigation station is located to starboard, aft in the main salon. It has a teak inlayed chart table with top that lifts up with plenty of storage directly underneath as well as three drawers below. (see electronics section for details on electronic equipment and electrical panels).

GALLEY:

The large U-shaped galley is situated to port aft of the salon.  Forward are twin deep stainless steel sinks with lots of counter space and under counter storage.  Ample fresh water is supplied by a high-efficiency SPECTRA Model 380C Watermaker with dual feed pumps, consuming only 1 amp per gallon of product water.  Aft in the galley, a new TECHNAUTICS “Cool Blue” state-of-the-art, energy-efficient refrigeration system with stainless steel box and new insulation was installed in 2007,Galley along with new CORIAN counter tops (“Midnight Sky” –  Black).  Two Alpenglow white/red area lights were installed in 2008.  Outboard to port, is a fully gimballed “Mariner Regal” 3 burner propane stove with oven (2-20lb. Aluminum Propane tanks are stored in a vented cockpit locker).  All around the galley there are huge amounts of storage both above and below the counters.  The galley has two opening, screened ports as well as an overhead hatch for lots of light and air.

AFT CABIN:

Directly aft of the navigation station, starboard side, is the aft cabin which has a double berth with extra overhead reading lights, a full length hanging locker, drawers, shelving, two screened opening ports, a vanity with a stainless sink, a seat and a solid teak folding door for privacy.

ELECTRICAL AND RENEWABLE ENERGY:

Aft of the companionway stairs is a custom panel with the main high amperage DC electrical switches, bilge pump and windlass breakers and solar panel  / wind generatorSolar panels, wind generator, antennas power input breakers and ammeters.   Behind the companionway stairs is an opening door for access to electrical wiring, fuses and storage.  Under the companionway stairs is the battery compartment.  (see “Electrical” for details) Power generated by 410 watts of Solar Panels plus the KISS Wind Generator is charge- controlled through an SES Flexcharge 60 amp Controller.   Saltwhistle is energy self-sufficient with surplus power routed to a heat sink in the water heater after satisfying all the ship’s power demands .

EXTERIOR BRIGHTWORK:

Cap Rails, Cabin Eyebrow, Hand Rails, Cockpit Table and Companionway Doors of incomparable “PASSPORT- QUALITY” solid teak are finished with multiple coats of High Gloss EPIFANES Varnish regularly applied and maintained to “piano-finish standard” and UV - protected while in the tropics with custom Sunbrella covers.

NEW REFRIGERATOR/FREEZER SPECIFICATIONS

In 2007, the original refrigerator/freezer area was completely removed and gutted of insulation down to the bare hull and replaced with a generously sized stainless steel box, encased in sealed closed-cell foam board insulation in excess of normal specifications, and a state-of-the-art energy efficient compressor system.
